This half-day training programme provides you with the knowledge and skills to administer two very different types of emergency medication for two different medical conditions:
- Buccal Midazolam (Buccolam)
- EpiPen (Epinephrine)
Buccal Miidazolam is sometimes prescribed to treat certain types of seizures associated with epilepsy.
EpiPen is used where a person may experience a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
Course Duration: ½ Day
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate an awareness of what Epilepsy is and recognise different seizure types
- Describe supporting a child experiencing a seizure, ensuring their safety and dignity
- List the main causes of epilepsy
- Demonstrate the importance of observing and recording seizure activity
- Recognise possible trigger factors of seizures
- Describe why an epilepsy/emergency management plan is important
- Demonstrate the ability to administer Buccolam safely (water is used in a syringe in place of Buccolam)
- Describe anaphylaxis
- Demonstrate the ability to administer EpiPen (Epinephrine) safely (Training EpiPens are used)
Certification: The training programme is a blend of theory and practice and is delivered by a trained Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Administration of Emergency Medicine Certificates are issued to participants who:
1. attended all components of the training programme
2. pass (80% pass rate) a mini exam
3. are deemed proficient by the trainer at both practicals (administration of both medicines).
Certificates are valid for two years.
Fee: €85 per participant or €500 for a group of up to 10 participants; this fee is VAT Exempt and inclusive of certification
